The first things you’ll need to do when arriving in Maastricht from abroad

Are you coming to study in Maastricht from abroad! In this article, we will help you on your way when coming here.

Getting a room

One of the first things you would like to do when arriving in Maastricht is of course getting a place to stay. Have a look at MaastrichHousing.com or the FacebookGroup “Rooms/ Kamer/ Zimmer in Maastricht’’. Next to his, you can also have a pleasant stay at The Student Hotel. You can rent a room for max. 365 days. You will have your own bathroom and shared kitchen and there are also endless spots to study.

Insurance

Do you reside in the Netherlands and are you not from an EU/EEA country? Then you are not entitled to health insurance. Not even if you have a residence permit that states that you are a student. However, it is possible to take out temporary insurance voluntarily.

Student association

One of the best ways to make new friends in the city is to join a student association and this is highly recommended! They organise fun activities and you really become part of the city. There are a lot of them in Maastricht. Visit the university website or ask your fellow students for more information.

Swapfiets

For a monthly price, you can get a so-called “Swapfiets”. Biking is the most common way to transport for students in The Netherlands, there are biking roads and parking spots everywhere. With swapfiets, you do not have to go on the hunt to buy your own bike and when your swapfiets is broken, they will fix it for you.

Work

Last but not least, you do actually need to pay for your pleasant student life in Maastricht. Therefore you can work and have a memorable time with nice colleagues. At Alert Hospitality we have multiple jobs in for example housekeeping, as a server, dish washer, breakfast shifts and at several events in hospitality.
